Seattle Erotic Art Festival 2010 to Debut New Theatrical Event Announcement and Call for Performance Art
The Seattle Erotic Art Festival is excited to announce the debut of an original piece of performance art to complement the world-class visual art exhibition planned for 2010. Award-winning NYC-based director Roger Benington will write and direct this new work in collaboration with locally and nationally recognized performance artists.
"I love the vibrant performing arts scene in Seattle," said Benington. "I'm thrilled to create an original theatrical experience that will draw on these amazing talents."
Benington, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, was awarded the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s Young Artist Fellowship to study directing at The Juilliard School. Past directing projects include David Sedaris’s The Santaland Diaries, God’s Ear by Jenny Schwartz, Sarah Kane’s Crave at Washington Ensemble Theatre, and Project Fabulocity!, an original play by and about queer youth in Salt Lake City. Additional grants awarded in support of Benington’s dynamic talent include the 2003-05 NEA/TCG Career Development Program Grant for Young Directors, a Jim Henson Foundation grant, and several grants from the Salt Lake City and Utah Arts Councils.
Applications are now being accepted for performances to fill a fresh narrative framework created by Benington. The director will choose acts from the entire range of performance styles: ballroom dance, burlesque, modern dance, ballet, circus arts, drag performance, puppeteering -- any individual or group with an erotic act to share is invited to apply. "Erotic" is open to a wide range of interpretations from the familiar to the boldly unexpected. This exciting new work will celebrate that range and the powerful diversity of our personal eroticism. (Note that fire performance is not possible in this venue.)
Artists must be willing to work with the director and/or choreographer to adapt their acts for the Seattle Erotic Art Festival. All body types, ages, genders, and ethnicities are encouraged to apply. Open to seasoned acts as well as interested novices. Auditions required. Performers must be at least 18 years old.
